The Book Chat!

I'm linking up with Sweet Green Tangerine today for the first time for The Book Chat! This week's theme is Romance Novels. I'm so glad this linkup fell on today because I have been wanting to post about one of my latest reads, 50 Shades Freed.

Spoiler alert! I wouldn't read any further if you don't want this book to be ruined for you!

I'm not quite sure this can be considered a "romance" novel, but I figured it was close enough and what some might consider a modern day romance novel? Anywho, here goes.

I just finished reading this book yesterday and it's the third book in the series. I got through the first book pretty fast and the second one was okay, but I just had the hardest time getting through the last book. I actually started reading it sometime before Christmas and just got around to finishing now.

I know a lot of people have been talking about this series and how they couldn't put it down...blah blah blah. I mean it was okay, but I was definitely over it by the third book. The whole porn factor was intriguing until maybe halfway through the second book, but it just got really monotonous and boring after a while.

The storyline could've easily fit into one book, however, it was so drawn out because the author kept repeating what seemed like the same sexual encounter way too many times. I thought it was just very unrealistic, well I guess maybe that's the point since it's fiction?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a crazy feminist activist whatsoever, but I really wasn't a fan of the way the relationship of the main characters was portrayed. Christian was constantly getting angry with Anna and threatening her. I understand that he has "psychological" issues and it all stemmed from that, but it was still just a little ridiculous. In the first two books, yah, I felt bad for Christian, but in the last book I realized just how big of a douche (excuse my language) he really was. I just couldn't believe the way he FREAKED out when Anna told him that she was preggo!

I guess my whole problem with this book is that many women are probably reading it, wishing that they had this mega-rich husband and maybe they really do want a sex life like the one portrayed in the book. That's all fine and if that's what you want to fantasize about, great. However, I would just hate for any female to think that it's okay to put up with that kind of aggressive, angry, abusive behavior just because a guy is wealthy and powerful. It makes me think that Anna is just pathetic.

Honestly, I'm usually a sucker for books like this. I read the Hunger Games trilogy, I've read all the Twilight books, and I've even read the Harry Potter series; granted these are all young adult books and not quite the same thing, but they are all bestsellers. I just wasn't a huge fan of this particular series.

On that note, I just purchased Safe Haven for my Kindle and can't wait to start reading it next! I guess I'm just a sucker for a sweet Nicholas Sparks kind of love story as opposed to a 50 Shades effed up one.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the 50 Shades series!

Welome to the book chat! Always glad to have new bloggers!

I read 1.5 of the Fifty shades books. I was furious through the entire first book because the feminist in me could not let certain things slide. I tried the second book a few months later and couldn't even finish it because it just seemed pointless. I still thought Twilight was much better.

Thanks for linking up!

I also read just over one of the 50 Shades books... I felt the same way you did. If you want a sex life like that fine, but who would really want a relationship like that? What a roller coaster. I do like that it's been pegged as mommy-porn, which always makes me chuckle. I like to hear things about women, reading in the news even if I don't like the book at all. Hope Save Haven is better for you!

Welcome to the Book Chat! I've been participating since the beginning and it is my absolute favorite link-up!! Always good to see some new bloggers. :) I didn't read this whole post because I've only read the first two books and I don't want to spoil the third one! So thanks for warning me.

I still need to finish it so I didn't read all of your post, but yay for a book linkup. I've been so busy that I'm way behind in reading your posts. Almost caught up!
